One unfortunate aspect of being a nurse is dealing with death. In almost all cases death is very stressful and upsetting for everyone involved. Every once in awhile, though, there is a heartwarming story.
Alexander and Jeanette Toczko of California got married in 1940, a time that dates all the way back to World War II. They had “dated” since they were both eight years old. After 75 years of marriage, Alexander broke his hip which left him bedridden. Jeannette soon also fell ill and they were both placed on hospice. The hospice nurse placed their beds so that they could fulfill their wish of dying in each others’ arms.
Alexander passed away first. “Wait for me, I’ll be there soon.” Jeanette told him as he passed away. She passed away a few hours later.
The hospice nurse said it was incredible to see the two of them taking their lasts breaths together. Their daughter said that their hearts had beat as one for as long as she can remember. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this beautiful couple.
